Day 29: Where are you?

Today we start with a series of questions God asked men, that which is recorded in the Bible. God doesn't ask questions so that He may know the answer. God asks questions to us so that we can check if we know the answer. It is much like the teaching-learning process. Typically, a teacher asks questions to the student, to help the student think further, and check if they know the answer, or even evaluate or access them.

'Where are you?' - The question to lost Adam:

Genesis 3:8-13 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

The story that beautifully begins in Genesis 1 and 2, sees an unexpected turn. Humanity is lost to the grips of sin, and the rest of the Bible is about the God of love Who comes in search of the lost. He is a God who graciously seeks, confronts, and offers reconciliation. John Hunter a Bible teacher has said, People who do not know Jesus Christ are never called “unsaved” in the Bible. The opposite of saved is not unsaved; it is lost. When Adam sinned, he became lost with reference to God. Do you feel lost? Sometimes we may not feel lost completely. Yet, there could be certain areas in our lives in which we feel lost.

  • Is there any attitude or desire in you that displeases God? Have you continued in that behavior such that you feel you have run far away from God? Do you feel lost in sin?

  • Do you feel lost and without meaning or purpose in your life? Are you trying to cover that by finding your own meaning in relationships, career, or pleasure? They are mere fig leaves and will decay in a day.

  • Do you feel shame and fear? Are you trying to shift the blame of failures onto another? Do you feel the necessity to repeatedly use positive affirmations, visualizations, and other techniques to deal with your guilt and scars?

What a wonderful promise we have in Christ! He said in Luke 19:10 that the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. Do not fear. For He promised in John 6:37 that those who come to Him, He will certainly not cast out. While He ascended from the earth He promised that He will be with us till the end of age and that He is coming soon to take us back home.

Where are you? If you are hearing the voice of the Lord today, what is your response?
